How easy it is to use Table of Contents Reviews and Testimonials The Book

Dear Colleagues, as you know, massage therapy can help people in so many ways. We are happy to present our book, Clinical Massage Therapy: Understanding, Assessing and Treating Over 70 Conditions, after four years of research, writing and design. It is based on the material required for the 2,200-hour massage therapy curriculum in Ontario, Canada, plus additional conditions that have been seen in clinical practice. At 1178 pages, it is extensively researched (over 650 citations in the bibliography), with an index and over 300 illustrations. Therapists and reviewers have found the information readable and easily accessible.

Why buy this book?
  • Therapists and Students
    While few practitioners have only one book on their bookshelf, people have described this text as the ultimate one-stop reference guide for treatment. It covers not only the pathology and anatomy, but also the assessment protocols you need, plus actual treatment plans and client self-care tips for the 70 different conditions listed. Here's an example of How easy it is to use.

  • Schools
    By choosing the chapters that apply to a given curriculum, this book can be (and is being) used in the classroom by any level of program. Post-graduate courses are easier to design by including additional chapters as classroom material.

  • Using this book, we hope that both massage students and therapists can continue to develop their clinical reasoning skills regardless of their level of education, be it 500, 1,000 or more hours in length.

    Some of the 70-plus conditions covered include tendinitis, headache, pregnancy, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, sprains, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinsons, scoliosis, asthma, thoracic outlet syndrome, whiplash and stress reduction. The complete Table of Contents can be seen here.

    Need more details?
    Five "Strategies" chapters provide a foundation for the chapters within that section of the book. We recommend that the appropriate "Strategies" chapter be read in conjunction with the specific treatment in a particular section; for example, "Strategies: massage therapy and the inflammatory process" is pre-reading for 'Strains" or "Whiplash".

    Each chapter begins with a section covering the pathology, physiology and anatomy giving the therapist a solid understanding of the client's condition before the treatment starts. There is a section on assessment that is based on SOAP note format:
  • Questions the therapist asks to determine if the client has the condition;
  • Observations and palpation findings that the therapist notices;
  • Range of motion and orthopedic testing results found if the condition is present.

    Finally, there is a section on the treatment plan, including contraindications and client self-care tips. Each treatment plan is clearly laid out with treament goals listed and the techniques necessary to achieve these goals. You choose your techniques, hydrotherapy and stretches, tailoring your treatment plan according to the symptoms your client is experiencing.

    Appendices, five in all, include anatomical terms, how to perform a postural assessment and details of all the orthopedic testing in the book grouped by regions of the body. We also include information on visceral pain referral patterns and common skin lesions.

    Clinical Massage Therapy is not designed as a recipe book. Our hope is that this text can act as a guide to the therapist or student, as well as being a handy reference for conditions that haven't been formally studied or are not commonly treated.
