I began to reflect on the types of hands-on healing in Western culture, which led me to massage therapy. After examining programs in various countries, including the UK and USA, I discovered that if I wanted to practice in Ontario, I had to graduate from a 2,200 hour massage program, then pass a provincial competency exam. I was surprised to find that, unlike some other countries and even other provinces of Canada, Ontario massage therapists were regulated under the same health regulations as physicians and other health care practitioners.
The new career was a perfect fit. Upon graduation in 1992, I was fortunate to take over a diverse clinical practice near Toronto, and was soon back enjoying my other love - teaching. I taught for nine years at Sutherland-Chan, until June 2001. In addition to teaching clinical skills and treatments, I supervised outreach clinics for seniors and for those with neurological injuries. During this time I took a variety of post-graduate courses including the use of essential oils, neuromuscular therapy, visceral manipulation and craniosacral therapy.
In 1995, I was approached by Fiona Rattray to collaborate on a comprehensive reference for therapist and students alike. After seeing the incredibly hard work Fiona put into her first book, it seemed rather a huge and time-consuming challenge, but I was excited to participate in this new project. The five years that followed were full with treating clients, teaching, and lots of writing and re-writing. The proud result was Clinical Massage Therapy: Understanding, Assessing and Treating Over 70 Conditions. The experience was at times frustrating, at other times elating. And we're continuing to collaborate with many new projects in the works.
From graduation to December 2002, I ran a clinic in the Toronto Beaches area. Happily, in January 2003, I and the company made the move to the Elora, Ontario area. My practice and Talus now operate out of the lower level of a terrific house located in a woodland. This space will also allow us to run workshops (check this website for upcoming events). Lately, I've continued my studies with courses in Matrix Repatterning (see www.Wellnesssystems.com for more information on this amazing therapy).
Other than work, my passions include my two dogs, Marley and Rodel - black standard poodles whose energy and sense of fun bring endless love and laughter. A joy of hiking developed when I was living in Alberta, with many summers spent in the Rocky Mountains. The photo on the home page was taken during a week-long overland hike on the John Muir Trail to Mount Whitney. Recently, I've taken up scuba diving, a wonderful and peaceful break from the hectic world - though only if it's done in warm water.
