ABOUT Fiona Rattray
Linda Ludwig Fiona Rattray The Company
Fiona Rattray, Registered Massage Therapist

I've always felt a connection to healing with my hands and to herbs. Twenty-five years ago, searching for a meaningful career, I investigated herbalism and Shiatsu therapy. While there were good programs in Canada in both these fields, at that time there was no legal recognition or formal regulation standards for these professions. Education can be expensive (financially and otherwise!) and I wanted my education to be recognized by the public and other health care professionals. In Ontario in the 1980's massage therapy was the only "alternative" profession with recognized standards of practice, so it seemed the best starting point.
I chose Sutherland-Chan School and Teaching Clinic in Toronto because of its excellent reputation, and graduated from there in 1983. After running my own massage therapy practice for several years, I became a practical examiner for the Ontario Board of Directors of Masseurs licensing exams. In 1990, I joined the faculty at Sutherland-Chan, teaching treatments for injuries and postural dysfunctions for more than 11 years. I was also Chief Examiner, and ran a practical skills improvement clinic. I left the school in 2001 in order to pursue further writing, publishing and teaching projects.

My post-graduate training includes matrix repatterning, neuromuscular therapy, visceral manipulation and craniosacral therapy. I'm a certified aromatherapist, and a member of the Ontario Massage Therapists Association. Along the way, I have worked for others - in wellness centers, spas, and in Chiropractic offices. I've also had my own practice, working with other massage therapists and Shiatsu therapists. For thirteen summers I had the amazing experience of working in the first aid and health care tent at an annual music festival. I saw a lot of acute injuries and flare ups of chronic conditions and learned a lot when it came to injury assessment. Massage therapists, herbalists, nurses, physicians, chiropractors and others brought the allopathic and alternative camps of medicine together in a model that was ahead of its time.

Currently I have a practice in the Elora area (150 km west of Toronto), with a focus on sports injuries, chronic pain and relaxation. Never forget relaxation - it's the basis for maintaining good health! I also enjoy the aspect of problem solving, or detective work, that goes into assessing and treating a client's injury. As a Registered Massage Therapist I can honestly say that I have never been bored in 22 years of practice. And it's great to be a part of a profession where you can keep on learning.

In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, dog walks, meditation and hiking. For the past seven years my big joy is scuba diving, both in warm and cold water.
